HELPING HANDS
Good morning to you!
I am a little late this morning. I got stuck on laundry and computer stuff, you know facebook, email and sending some work stuff for my husband. I also was reading an article about a Methodist pastor who was moved to a new church on the 26th of June. About a 2 weeks before he started preaching, on the 30th, he decided to do something that would change his life forever.
He had a dream sometime in April, I think, after he received news of his new church, and God told him to be homeless for a week so he could tell the new congregation what it was like and they needed to serve God wholeheartedly. Wow! So, he lived for 5 days on the street. Totally poor with nothing. His family knew and 4 people in his new church knew what he was going to do.
I can't go into all he experienced because it would take pages but I will put the link at the end of this blog so you can read it yourself if you wish. Anyway, he couldn't believe what homeless people experience and how they are looked down upon. Sure, he said that there are those out there who choose to be homeless so they can take advantage. But there are those out there on the street that have really lost everything due to medical issues, or loss of jobs, etc. and they truly don't want to be there.
As Christians, how are we helping people who really need help? Are we giving to the food banks or helping in a soup kitchen or taking food to someone who needs it? What are we doing to make a difference, to give a helping hand?
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill
cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under
a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who
are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they
may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16
God calls us to make a difference. In all reality, it is easy to give money to someone or to a ministry. But can we get out of our comfort zone and do the work that needs to be done. I find it very easy to give out of my plenty but am I giving out of my need? Am I giving my last dime or saving it for my need?
And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts
into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow
putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you
that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these
out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she
out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”
Luke 21:1-4
“Never
lose sight of the fact that the most important
yardstick of your
success will be how you treat other
people – your family, friends, and
coworkers, and
even strangers you meet along the way. ”
- Barbara BushIf we can make a difference in the world, our country, our town, our neighborhood, then we have given a helping hand in the way God has called us to. It doesn't have to be big, but maybe someday it will be something big. But just doing it is what matters.
Have a blessed day!
