GOD'S MERCY

Good morning to you this fine, cool day!

May you feel loved and blessed today! May God fill you to overflowing with His love and mercy this day!

‘The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy,
forgiving iniquity and transgression;
Numbers 14:18a

Mercy! What is that? First of all, this scripture is from the Old Testament.
Mercy is:
1. Compassionate treatment, especially of those under one's power; clemency.
2. A disposition to be kind and forgiving: a heart full of mercy.
3. Something for which to be thankful; a blessing: It was a mercy that no one was hurt.
4. Alleviation of distress; relief: Taking in the refugees was an act of mercy

O Lord, help us have mercy on others as God has mercy on us. How forgiving are we? I never thought of mercy as compassionate treatment but of forgiveness. But in all reality forgiveness is compassionate treatment. Anyway, God has mercy on us everyday. As soon as we ask for forgiveness, God's mercy is immediate, I believe. When we ask He doesn't say "well, let me think about it and I will let you know tomorrow". Oh no. When we ask, God forgives. He shows mercy on us always.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
1 Chronicles 16:34

How many times is the word mercy in the Bible? The KJV uses it 248 times and the NIV 124 times.

God definitely shows mercy on us. He says so.

"Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy."
Matthew 6:7 (KJV)

"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And
what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and
to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
Micah 6:8 (NIV)

"Speak and act as those who are going to be judged
by the law that gives freedom, because judgment
without mercy will be shown to anyone who has
 not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!"
James 2:12-13 (NIV)

These are just a few of the verses that talk about mercy. God showed mercy on us because He loves us and gave His life for us on the cross.

"A common adage says that Grace gives what we do not deserve, i.e., Eternal Life, while Mercy withholds what we do deserve, i.e., Eternal Punishment; but, Mercy goes much deeper, in that it is the Lovingkindness of God. "Shew Thy marvellous lovingkindness [Hebrew, checed, meaning mercy], O Thou that savest by Thy Right Hand them which put their trust in Thee from those that rise up against them" (Psalm 17:7). In the Old Testament, of the 248 times that the Hebrew word checed is found in the Authorized Version (KJV), 149 times it is rendered mercy, 40 times it is rendered kindness, and 30 times it is rendered lovingkindness. "How excellent is Thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Thy wings" (36:7). (From What is Mercy? by Tom Stewart.)

So, the mercy of God is lovingkindness and withholds what we deserve.  And do we show that lovingkindness toward others. Oh, Lord, help us!

Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
Bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart,
Proverbs 3:3

So, today if the opportunity comes up, show God's mercy on others as He always does for us. Remember He loves us so much that He shows mercy on us.

Have a blessed day!
